On a global level, the field of integrated power electronics system has enormous po-tential for sustainable innovation. Power electronics systems are a key enabling technology, not only for the generation, distribution, and storage of electrical energy (for example, the harvesting of energy from renewable resources, or DC grids with bidirectional energy flow), but also for making less electrical energy do more for the people who use it (for example, electrical mobility: bikes, cars, busses, trains, and airplanes, or next generation industrial drive technology: Industry 4.0). The change from large, centralized electrical energy generation to distributed, renewable generation—made possible by power electronics equipment—requires automated systems with intelligent hard- and software, which has been continually accompanied by interdisciplinary cooperation with microelectronics and computer science.
Furthermore, power electronics continues to make new ground in areas with huge potential for growth, such as for lighting and medical devices, e.g. mobile X-ray systems.
However, one prerequisite for all power electronics applications is the advancement of power semiconductor devices. Although the classical silicon-based devices continue to dominate the field, it can be expected that silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium-nitride (GaN) will only gain in significance in the future. For these technologies, a number of hurdles remain regarding e.g. wafer manufacturing, as well as device packaging, connection technology and reliability.
The conference will be a platform for exchange and dialogue with the microelectron-ics community; it will allow discourse on both past experience and future perspec-tives, and also on the limits and challenges of the manufacturing and usage of the latest power semiconductor devices.
