MEMS Back to Double Digit Growth

Abstract

MEMS is back on fast track with double digit growth from 2010 to 2014 after having experienced its first recession in 2008 - 2009.
The automotive MEMS market for example is rebounding spectacularly early 2010 with most sensor suppliers reaching again the high level marks of 2007. Not only safety mandates like TPMS in Europe after 2013 or ESC in the US and Europe boost the market, the Chinese market is also a new factor of growth especially for powertrain applications.
The consumer and mobile phones markets confirm its role as new locomotive of the MEMS fast train. In 2009, 28% of the phones featured an accelerometer, up from 10% in 2008. Gyroscopes are appearing in first smart phones in 2010 and noise suppression boosts the MEMS microphone market as it drives adoption of dual microphones in phones.
Finally, high value market in medicine, instrumentation defence and aeronautics continue to be a fertile ground for over 100 suppliers of MEMS sensors, from MEMS gyroscopes which gradually displace their fiber optic counterparts to microbolometers for predictive maintenance, building inspection of surveillance applications.
Fast growth comes along with a strong price pressure and iSuppli will show how innovation e.g. on packaging enables to defend margins in that dynamic market.

Biography

Jérémie Bouchaud, Director - Principal analyst MEMS, iSuppli Deutschland GmbH iSuppli
Jérémie Bouchaud is unique to the MEMS industry, his breadth of MEMS device and application knowledge is unmatched, particularly in terms of automotive, consumer markets and RF MEMS. He was a founder and head of MEMS research for Wicht Technologie Consulting (WTC), acquired by iSuppli in April 2008. At iSuppli, Jérémie is responsible for the MEMS service area.
The success of WTC was due to a large degree to the MEMS research which Jérémie developed. In the course of his career, Jérémie has led over 100 MEMS-related market research endeavors. Prior to WTC, he oversaw technology transfer for sensors and MEMS at the German office of CEA-LETI.
Jérémie is a graduate of the Munich University of Applied Sciences and of Ecole Supérieur de Commerce of Grenoble. He speaks German, English and French.

Chip Packaging In Europe – A Market Overview (TSV/WLP, Leadframe based, and laminate based capabilities)

Abstract

Sub-Contract Assembly and Test facilities (SAT’s) are predominantly an “offshore” (OSAT) capability as far as the European semiconductor chip makers are concerned. So in terms of chip packaging capability, Europe has been considered as only a provider of specialist and low volume capability. Even so, top IC makers such as STMicroelectronics still have some of their own in house assembly and test facilities located in Europe.
Emerging chip packaging technologies tend to start their life in European companies. This is the only way that Europe keeps itself “in the game”. Smart card assembly, (chip cards), Solar Cells and plastic electronics are very much European developments and the new TSV and wafer level chip packaging technologies are key developments supported by European equipment suppliers, who serve a global market.
This presentation looks at where the European Chip Packaging Industry is and how it is tailoring itself to meet the demands of a fast moving, dynamic market segment. It will review the overall picture and feature an overview of the top Europe based sub-contract packaging facilities that support the ever changing needs of European chip makers.

He has published a number of related technical papers including Packaging for Optomems, RF components and Molded interconnect devices and has presented Papers at conferences in USA, Europe and SE Asia.

PV Market Overview – The Real Callenges Lie Ahead!

Abstract

2009 was the year of crises but the real challenges lie ahead. The year 2010 marked significant change in the German PV market.
In the second half of 2009 the market managed to outstrip even the most optimistic expectations. Germany reaffirmed its reputation and position, once again, by proving to be reliable safeguard for the PV industry. The German PV market will undoubtedly experience yet another surge in demand in 2010. And yet this is where the risk lies: Following drastic changes in the incentive schemes, the world’s strongest PV market is now facing an even bigger challenge. However, what does the future hold? The impact of the amendments made to the German Renewable Energies Law will certainly be felt across the board. Which markets will be able to absorb the volume of production that has flooded onto the German market, particularly in the last two years? How will the global PV industry develop? What positions will the markets of, for example, China, India, USA and the UK occupy in the future?
The days where business was straight forward and trouble free are past: PV companies now have to find and explore new opportunities. EuPD Research will highlight these opportunities as well as providing an overview of the general developments in the global PV market thus far.
